Its prominent position suggests that such a spot once saw the mystic practises of the ancient Brigantian race. This lofty, and often bleak, promontory was ideally suited to the Draconic worship of the Druid. Visited by Benjamin Disraeli in 1844, the site finds a place in his novel "Sybil".
